A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us verify the footage.

We are checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.

Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
