The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the hit program wrapping up—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Fan Response
One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Has the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
