Pope Reinforces Status to England's No 3 Role with Impressive 90 Versus Lions

It is hard to gauge how relevant of the English team's warm-up fixture will be remotely relevant when their Ashes battle begins 10km away at the Perth venue on Friday – no distance in geography or duration but worlds away in import and atmosphere – but if it achieved solely boosting Ollie Pope's confidence, that by itself has made the endeavor valuable.

England's No 3 – that much is surely totally certain – built on his first-innings ton by adding an additional 90 in the second innings, and the truly notable was not merely the quantity of runs but the manner in which they were accumulated. On occasion the player seemed imperious, striking a dozen fours and a couple of maximums, connecting with the ball perfectly but with fierce determination.

This was only a friendly against a England Lions squad that deployed exactly 11 pitchers throughout a match played in amid a handful of spectators in a public park, but it was still very impressive. Officially, the England team, set a target of 202 once the Lions closed their follow-on innings on 251 for six, triumphed by a margin of five wickets after Smith raced the team across the finish line with a stream of fours and sixes.

Joe Root clocked up a further 31 points but was not hugely assured during the English team's warm-up.

Zak Crawley and Duckett, the other two big first-innings' achievers, both failed in the second knock, while Joe Root made additional points – 31 on this time – but was not enormously more assured, then being confused and accordingly dismissed by Will Jacks. Brook suffered an identical fate shortly after.

Shoaib Bashir – who finished the game having delivered 12 overs for either team – will have encountered some of the batting he confronted rather challenging. His initial six deliveries against the Lions conceded 56, with Ben McKinney tucking in to pitching that if not completely wayward was surely far from dangerous.

By the conclusion the sixth of that period, the English side's other bowlers had allowed nearly exactly the same total of runs – 57 – from 15, though Bashir grew a little less generous in time, conceding 27 from his final six. He took a single wicket, taking a sharp, low-down grab, falling to his right side, to end Bethell's innings for 70, from 80 deliveries.

Bethell, redeeming managing just a small score in the initial innings, was among a trio of fifty-scorers in the Lions team's top four. McKinney's performances from opener were steadier than those from their No 3: he made 66 in their initial knock and improved by two in their follow-up, using 61 balls for his 50 runs, with five and a couple six-hit shots, each against Bashir's's pitching. Jacob Bethell reached 68 before a mishit to Ben Stokes at cover, who took a low grab at ankle height.

Cox displayed like reliability, and built on his first-innings 53 with an additional 57, at slightly more than a run per delivery. There were some remarkably handsome hits during his innings, such as a drive down the ground and a pull from back-to-back Brydon Carse deliveries to reach his 50 runs.

Following his absence from the opening day of this fixture with a stomach upset and provided merely the smallest of contributions to the second, Brydon Carse bowled excellently when eventually afforded the opportunity, with McKinney and Jordan Cox included in his three scalps.
