The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
