Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Passing on unwanted presents could be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done the right way.
A Charitable Sale
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 gifts given to her by world leaders on official trips. The eclectic collection reportedly features items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, together, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Italian art dealer. The specific date has not been finalized, but the intention is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the proceeds donated to various charities.
Storage Room Holdings
The items reportedly locked away in a repository on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away indefinitely.
The detailed catalog remains officially released, but a glimpse was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was reviewed by officials. The query raised if a legal value limit was being followed. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.
An International Assortment of Presents
Notable gifts feature:
- A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Political Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.
This charitable initiative symbolizes a distinct method to manage the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a leader's tenure.
