Ayoub El Kaabi's Spectacular Finish Wraps Up Morocco's Triumph Against Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations Opening Match.

The the Moroccan side overcame a nervy start to overcome their island opponents in the tournament's first match on the weekend, thanks to the Real Madrid attacker and substitute Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half.

This constituted a hardly emphatic showing, though, from the highly fancied Moroccans, who sit 97 places higher than the tiny island nation in the world rankings and had to toil hard for the victory in rainy conditions at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Tense Start and Spurned Chances

Morocco failed to convert an early spot-kick and were locked at 0-0 at half-time even with controlling the ball, finally breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.

It arrived after Noussair Mazraoui did well to prevent the ball from going out before laying it square for Brahim Díaz to calmly pass into the net.

Every opening game is always difficult but we improved in the second half,” commented Morocco coach Regragui.

The Substitute's Moment of Brilliance

The tension was subsequently eased by a moment of pure individual brilliance from Ayoub El Kaabi. Just 10 minutes after his introduction, the striker connected with a cross with a spectacular overhead kick in the 74th minute, doubling and ensuring the win.

Earlier in the match, the hosts might have taken the lead in the 11th minute when a penalty was given for a foul on Díaz. However, Rahimi's effort was kept out by keeper Yannick Pandor.

Comoros Resistance and Late Opportunity

The underdogs stoutly defended against Morocco for long periods before the Moroccans' individual talent eventually made the difference.

Shot-stopper Yannick Pandor made a number of other good stops to limit the score as the match wore on, even though his team created a chance for an equalizer shortly after the first goal, with Rafiki Saïd firing straight at Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Injury Worry for Hosts

The victory was partially overshadowed by an injury to the skipper, Saïss, who limped off after the 18th minute in some distress.

The defender had only made his comeback to the national side last month following a lengthy layoff caused by a serious ankle operation.

This result continues the team's record-breaking run of consecutive wins to 19, surpassing the previous record of 15 set by Spain from 2008 and 2009.
